Majiang, also known as Mahjong, is a four-player strategy game that originated in China during the Qing Dynasty and is now popularly played in many countries around the world. Players typically use a set of 144 tiles - each with unique images - to build suits, sets, and sequences before declaring a win.
To begin a game of Mahjong, the tiles are thoroughly shuffled and arranged face down in a square pattern on the table. Each player then draws a total of 13 tiles and arranges them to form two sets of sequences, or “Chows”, and two sets of pairs, or “Pongs”. The remaining 7 tiles are designated as the “Hands” of the player, which are kept secret from the other players. The aim of the game is to be the first player to build their “Hands” into four separate sets and a pair. Players then have the option to make a move from those in their “Hands” to finish the game.
The game can become complicated once more tiles are put into play as each player will attempt to build their own winning sequence while hindering the others. Once a player has a standard Pong or Chow, they can then make use of special moves such as a Kong or a special win declaration known as a “Majiang” to remove tiles from the table and add to their own set.
A winning hand must include four sets and a pair, which cannot include the Flower tiles, or bonus tiles. Once the player has declared a victory, they can claim the points they’ve earned through the Mahjong game. In most cases, a draw is declared if the game does not come to a conclusion within a certain number of rounds.

The aim of the game is to build four sets and a pair using only the tiles in your “Hands” while at the same time hindering the progress of the other players.
