Playing Mahjong is a popular Chinese pastime. It is a game that requires the players to use their knowledge of Chinese characters, numbers, and shapes to earn points by forming patterns on their tiles. The object of the game is to score the most points by forming combinations of tiles.
A typical game of Mahjong starts with all four players receiving thirteen tiles each. The player who is the east wind discards a tile which will decide the prevailing wind for the round. This is followed by the other players either drawing from the wall of tiles or claiming a discarded tile from the others. Every player draws and discard until they create certain patterns with the tiles in their hand.
The different types of patterns are divided into two categories: Chows, Pungs and Kongs. Chows are sequences of three consecutive tiles of the same suit. Pungs are sets of three identical tiles, while Kongs are sets of four identical tiles.
Once a player has completed a pattern, they must declare it. A player who completes a pattern will receive bonus points in addition to any points scored from the pattern. The game ends when one player has declared four Kongs, or when all four players have passed their turn.
The winner of the game is the player with the highest total scores at the end of the game. In cases where players have a tie, the player with the most Kongs wins.
